To support the concept of individualized learning, the COMET tool was developed. It helps organize competences within a digital matrix and enrich them with metadata. It enables learning organizations to create customized competence matrices, which can be grouped thematically to align with personalized learning pathways.

Contributing to a digital competence grid—by adding indicators or evidence such as learning materials, quizzes, and tasks—can be done collaboratively. The primary goal is to provide a transparent visualization of the competence areas to be achieved, either within a specific subject or across interdisciplinary contexts.

Developing and visualizing digital competence grids offers the following opportunities:

• Competency-based visualization of topics and subject areas
• Thematic integration by combining multiple subjects
• Support for individualized learning approaches
• Creation of personalized learning plans
• Documentation of competences, including achievement-based tracking when integrated with a learning management system (an interface to Moodle is already available)
• Definition and mapping of relationships between competences
• Development of professional profiles or career pathways based on competence structures
